Toronto FC II announced that the club has signed defender Talen Maples to a USL contract. Maples will be added to the club’s roster pending league and federation approval.

“Talen has shown extremely well in front of the first team staff during preseason,” said Toronto FC II head coach Mike Munoz. “We are excited to add him to our second team roster where he will bring leadership and experience to our back line.”

Maples, 22, was selected 72nd overall (third round) by Toronto FC in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas in January. He played college soccer at Southern Methodist University from 2017 to 2019, making 49 appearances in three seasons for the Mustangs, scoring four goals with eight assists. He was named to the American Athletic Conference (AAC) All-Rookie Team in 2017, AAC First Team All-Conference in 2018, Third Team All-Region in 2018 and AAC All-Academic Team during all three seasons (2017-2019). In 2017, Maples helped SMU become the first program in American Athletic Conference history to claim both the regular season and conference tournament championships, a feat the Mustangs repeated in 2018. Maples then helped SMU capture another conference tournament title in 2019.
