Toronto FC announced today that the club has acquired up to $400,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from Colorado Rapids in exchange for defender Kosi Thompson. As part of the transaction, Toronto FC will receive a guaranteed $200,000 in 2026 GAM and up to an additional $200,000 in conditional GAM if certain performance-based metrics are met. Additionally, TFC may retain a sell-on percentage in the event of a future permanent transfer of the defender.
“We would like to thank Kosi for his service to our club,” said Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez. “As one of our homegrown players, Kosi dedicated many years of his football journey to TFC, and we greatly appreciate his efforts within our environment. We understand his desire to challenge for consistent minutes at this time thus we were able to come together for this move. We wish Kosi all the best in the next chapter of his career and he will always have a home at TFC.”
Thompson, 23, was in his fifth season with Toronto FC where he made a combined 113 appearances across all competitions (MLS regular season, Canadian Championship and Leagues Cup) since signing a First Team contract as a Homegrown Player on February 25, 2022. The Toronto, Ontario native made his debut for TFC against Columbus Crew on March 12, 2022, and scored his first goal for the club against Real Salt Lake on April 9, 2022. During the 2023 season, Thompson went on a short loan spell Norwegian side Lillestrøm SK in August, where he made four appearances for the First Team before returning to TFC.
Prior to joining TFC, Thompson spent the 2021 season with Toronto FC II, where he made 27 appearances during the 2021 USL League One regular season. He signed his first professional contract with TFC II on May 13, 2021. The Academy product represented Toronto FC Academy in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USSDA) competition from 2016 to 2020, scoring 16 goals in 20 appearances across three age groups (U-13, U-16/17 and U18/19). In 2019, he was part of the U-16 team that won the 2019 Dallas Cup and was named to the 2019-20 Generation Adidas Best XI.
