Toronto FC sign Víctor Vázquez

Toronto FC announced today that the club has signed Spanish midfielder Víctor Vázquez through 2023 with an option for 2024. Vázquez will be added to the roster pending the receipt of the International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

“We are excited to have a player like Victor join the team and reinforce our midfield depth,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley. “He is a talented player with a great understanding of the game, an excellent passer and brings experience and creativity to our midfield.”

Vázquez, 35, returns to Toronto FC after spending the past two seasons with LA Galaxy. During his first stint with TFC (2017-2019), Vázquez notched 18 goals and 28 assists in 65 total appearances (MLS Regular Season, MLS Cup Playoffs, Canadian Championship, Concacaf Champions League and Campeones Cup). The Spanish midfielder played an important role in 2017, Toronto FC’s most successful season in MLS history, when the Reds captured the Canadian Championship, the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup. The same year, Vázquez earned honours as a member of the MLS Best XI after scoring eight goals and adding 16 assists during regular season play.

“I am so happy to be back home,” said midfielder Víctor Vázquez. “I cannot wait to see you all again and play in front of you on those special nights at BMO Field. We will have fun and bring the club back to the greatest, where it belongs.”

In two seasons with the Galaxy (2021-2022), Vázquez registered five goals and 11 assists over 57 appearances in all competitions (MLS regular season, MLS Cup Playoffs and U.S. Open Cup). Prior to his return to MLS, the midfielder spent two seasons playing in Qatar for Al-Arabi Sports Club and Umm Salal Sport Club and then in Belgium for K.A.S Eupen (First Division A) in 2020.

Along other stops in his career, Vázquez played for Liga MX club Cruz Azul, where he made 23 appearances, scoring one goal with one assist in 2016. The Spaniard began his career at his hometown club FC Barcelona (Barcelona) at the age of 10, and then joined Barcelona C and Barcelona B, where he spent five seasons. He was called up into Barcelona’s first team and made his debut for Barcelona when he came on as a substitute on April 12, 2008. The attacking midfielder featured in two UEFA Champions League group stage matches during the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons as Barcelona went on to win the Champions League in both seasons. After his time with the Spanish club, Vázquez joined Belgian side Club Brugge KV (Club Brugge) of the Jupiler Pro League. In five seasons with the Belgian club, he made 173 appearances, scoring 25 goals with 50 assists combined in all competitions.
