Toronto FC sign midfielder Alonso Coello Camarero


Toronto FC announced Thursday that the club has signed midfielder Alonso Coello Camarero through 2023 with options for 2024 and 2025. He will be added to the roster pending the receipt of the International Transfer Certificate (ITC).

"Alonso is a talented and smart player, and we are excited to add him to the First Team," said Toronto FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley. "He was a key player for TFC II in the 2022 MLS NEXT Pro season. This year, he was integrated into the First Team during preseason and played two matches with us, demonstrating his technical quality and ability to find spaces between lines. We are looking forward to his continued development."

Coello Camarero, 23, recently signed two short-term deals with Toronto FC and made his debut with the First Team when he started against San Jose Earthquakes on March 25. Coello Camarero made his second appearance when he came on in the 78th minute on April 1 against Charlotte FC. The midfielder originally joined Toronto FC II on April 1, 2022, and made his debut on April 3 against FC Cincinnati 2. In his first season with the Young Reds, the midfielder served as team captain and logged a team-high 2,189 minutes across 25 appearances through the MLS NEXT Pro regular season. 

Prior to joining Toronto FC II, he spent three years (2018-2021) at Florida Atlantic University, where he registered three goals and 11 assists in 60 appearances. In his freshman year, he was named to the All-Conference USA Third Team and All-Freshman Team in 2018. A three-year captain for the Owls, he was named to the All-Conference USA First Team in 2019, before earning All-Conference USA Second Team honours in his junior and senior years (2021). The Spanish midfielder was a four-time All-Conference USA selection and became the first Owl to accomplish the recognition since 2006. He was also a three-time Conference-USA Preseason honouree.
