Toronto FC announced today that the club has acquired Norwegian forward Adama Diomande off waivers and he will be under contract through 2024 with an option for 2025. Diomande will be added to the roster pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
“I had the opportunity to work with Dio at Stabæk and at LAFC, and I am excited to welcome him to Toronto FC,” said Toronto FC Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley. “He is a proven striker with vast experience playing in MLS and Europe. His smart runs, athletic presence, and skill to finish in the box will immediately impact our attack.”
Diomande, 32, joins Toronto FC and is reunited with Head Coach and Sporting Director Bob Bradley, who coached him at Stabæk in Norway (2015) and Los Angeles FC (2018). With LAFC, Diomande made an instant impact on the team after scoring nine goals in his first seven MLS games, including the first hat-trick in LAFC’s history on June 30, 2018, and earning MLS Player of the Month honours in July 2018. During the 2019 season, the Norwegian international played an instrumental role for LAFC, as he helped lead the club to the 2019 Supporters’ Shield and registered eight goals and seven assists during the MLS regular season, before scoring two goals in two MLS Cup Playoff appearances. In all, Diomande registered 24 goals and 11 assists in 52 appearances across all competitions (MLS Regular Season, MLS Cup Playoffs, U.S. Open Cup and Concacaf Champions League) for LAFC.
Diomande began his career at the youth academies of Holmlia, Vålerenga and FK Lyn in Norway. He made his professional debut with Lyn as a substitute against Hamarkameratene on October 19, 2008. Following a short stint at Skeid, Diomande joined IL Hödd, where he registered 18 goals in 28 appearances. After successful campaigns in Hödd, Diomande signed with Norwegian top-flight club Strømsgodset Toppfotball, where he notched 16 goals in 51 games over three seasons and led the club to a league title in 2013. The versatile striker also spent two years with Dinamo Minsk (Belarus, First Division) before he joined Stabæk (Norway, First Division), where he scored 25 goals and added three assists in 26 appearances. Prior to his move to MLS, Diomande joined English club Hull City in the summer of 2015, and in three seasons, he tallied eight goals and three assists in 64 matches.
Born in Oslo, Norway, Diomande has represented the Norway national team and made his senior debut against Azerbaijan in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying match on June 12, 2015. In total, he has appeared in 11 matches for Norway, including five FIFA World Cup qualifiers. His lone goal and assist for his country came in Norway’s 4-1 victory over San Marino on October 11, 2016, in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
