Toronto FC announced Tuesday that it has acquired a conditional 2015 first-round MLS SuperDraft pick from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for the rights to goalkeeper Stefan Frei.
“Parting with a player of Stefan’s caliber and character is always difficult, but as we move forward with our re-shaping of the Club, it is important that we have increased flexibility to make additional moves. This trade provides us with that flexibility,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Stefan is a great player and an even better person who will always hold a special place in the Club’s history. We wish him all the best as he moves on to the next stage of his career.”
Frei, 27, recently completed his fifth season in Major League Soccer, all with Toronto FC. Frei was originally selected in the first round (13th overall) in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft from the University of California. Frei departs Toronto FC as the all-time club leader in matches played with 99 combined appearances from MLS league matches, Canadian Championship matches, and the CONCACAF Champions League. His all-time combined record stands at 30-38-29 (wins-losses-draws) with 28 clean sheets.
Frei was a member of the club’s four consecutive Canadian Championship wins (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012).
