THROUGH THE YEARS
TFC host 2022 MLS expansion club Charlotte FC for the tenth all-time meeting between the two sides. Historically, Toronto holds a 3W-5L-1T record in nine regular season meetings with Charlotte. Charlotte ran out 3-1 winners when the two Eastern Conference clubs met earlier this season on May 16. On Wednesday, the Reds will be looking to secure their first home win over the Crown since Lorenzo Insigne’s long-range strike gave the hosts all three points in a 1-0 result on March 9, 2024.
STEP BY STEP
The Reds enter Matchday 21 on the back of earning results in their two previous matches (1W-1T) and in four of their last five matches (1W-3T) since returning from the FIFA World Cup 26™ break. On July 31, Toronto concluded their four-match road trip with a 1-1 draw against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium. NYCFC opened the scoring from the spot through Nicolás Fernández before TFC responded just before half-time when Djordje Mihailovic converted from close range. New signing Niklas Dorsch made his Toronto FC debut as a starter, becoming the 14th player to debut for the Reds this season.

On August 15, TFC returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over New England Revolution at BMO Field. The Reds broke the deadlock in the 43rd minute when Theo Corbeanu’s shot deflected off New England’s Will Sands on its way to the net. Eight minutes later, TFC doubled their advantage when Dániel Sallói and Djordje Mihailovic combined to find Niklas Dorsch, who finished the move with a stunning first-time strike to make it 2-0. With the goal, Dorsch became the seventh different player to open his account for the Reds during the 2026 season. On the goal, Sallói recorded his 10th goal contribution (four goals, six assists) and Mihailovic recorded his fifth (two goals, three assists) of the 2026 MLS season. The hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 76th minute when Mihailovic was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Carles Gil. New England Revolution pulled back a consolation goal through Wilson Harris in the 90th minute, before TFC closed out the 2-1 result to secure all three

TEAM OF THE MATCHDAY
On Monday, Toronto FC midfielder Niklas Dorsch was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for Matchday 20 following a commanding, all-action performance capped by his thunderous game-winning goal in the Reds’ 2-1 win over New England Revolution. Fresh off signing with TFC on July 28, Dorsch enjoyed a memorable home debut in the club’s first match on home soil since May 9. Shortly after TFC took the lead through Theo Corbeanu’s shot that deflected off Will Sands for an own goal, Djordje Mihailovic controlled Dániel Sallói’s pass at the top of the box before laying the ball off to Dorsch. The German midfielder unleashed a powerful, curling effort that flew past Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner and into the top corner to make it 2-0. The first-half stoppage time golazo, Dorsch’s first goal for the Reds, was also nominated for MLS’ AT&T Goal of the Matchday and ultimately proved to be the difference in a 2-1 win for the hosts.
Along with his game-winning goal, Dorsch’s all-action performance and physical presence in the middle of the park also earned him Player of the Match honours postgame. The 28-year-old ranked among the Reds’ top five players in passes (29), successful pass completion (93.5%) and distance covered (11.04 km) on the night, helping Toronto FC return to winning ways. The honour marks Niklas Dorsch’s first MLS Team of the Matchday selection with TFC since joining the club in July. In total, Toronto FC have now earned seven MLS Team of the Matchday selections during the 2026 MLS regular season – Emilio Aristizábal (1), José Cifuentes (1), Niklas Dorsch (1), Luka Gavran (1), Richie Laryea (1), Josh Sargent (1) and Walker Zimmerman (1).
