You would be forgiven for not realizing Doneil Henry is only 21-years-old.

On Wednesday Toronto FC confirmed the Canadian international is off to join Apollon Limassol, the club he was sold to earlier this season, after spending the 2014 campaign on loan with TFC.

For Henry it’s a dream come true. The Brampton native’s humble beginnings, playing youth soccer with the Brampton Bullets and North Mississauga, paved the way for a burgeoning career that will continue in Europe.

“I’m very proud of him ... I’ve got so much confidence in him and know the player he can be,” said Steven Caldwell of Henry at the start of the season.

Since that time Henry continued to blossom while also battling the trials and tribulations that accompany being a young centre-back in Major League Soccer. Henry showed his versatility for Canada under Benito Floro, playing right back on several occasions.

Henry’s trial with West Ham earlier this year led to his permanent move to Europe. During that stint under the tutelage of Sam Allardyce, Henry realized he belonged. 

“I didn’t feel out of place,” he said after returning to Toronto. “TFC’s my home. I’ve never been anywhere else, in another professional environment. I thought that when I went there (to West Ham) I really showed well for myself. It really opened my eyes.”

At 21, the world is Henry’s oyster. His dedication to improvement was evident throughout Doneil’s years with the Reds. Though this chapter with Toronto FC has closed another begins shortly.
