Akinola named to MLS 22 Under 22

Toronto FC forward Ayo Akinola was named to the annual 22 Under 22, presented by BodyArmor on Tuesday, honouring the best young prospects in the league.

The Canadian international came in at #17, marking the second time he has been included after being ranked fourth in the 2020 edition of the rankings.

After a breakout season in 2020 that saw Akinola bag a team-high nine goals in 15 appearances for the Reds, the 21-year-old was hoping to build on that success in 2021. He managed to score three times for the Reds before an unfortunate injury derailed his season, suffering an ACL injury in a Concacaf Gold Cup match vs. the United States on Sunday, July 18, his first-ever start for the Canadian national team.

The voting panel was made up by MLSsoccer.com staff, members of the MLS player department and external media. Voters were asked to rank their Top-22 players in order based on technical, tactical, physical and potential abilities.
