3 Keys to Toronto vs. Colorado Rapids

RBNY Three Keys

For the first time in a month, the Reds are back at BMO Field. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys to the match as TFC return home to take on the Colorado Rapids.
Show No Mercy

Just a season ago, the Colorado Rapids saw themselves fall one win shy of claiming the Supporters’ Shield.

The 2017 season has been a much different story.

The Rapids currently sit on a Western Conference-worst 19 points through 18 matches, scoring a conference-low 19 goals. The 2010 MLS Cup Champions have yet to pick up a single point on the road, going 0-7-0 away from Dick’s Sporting Goods Park this season.

If TFC are to stay atop the league standings and keep their Supporters’ Shield aspirations on track, they will need to take care of business against cellar dwellers like the Rapids at home.

Next Man Up

The depth of the squad has been tested time and again this season, and Saturday night will be no different.

The Rapids have had over two weeks to prepare for the Reds, while Toronto is coming off a midweek road fixture in New York. On short rest, TFC will need to lean on their entire squad once again given the international call-ups and absentees through injury.

Toronto should receive a boost, however, as the likes of Armando Cooper, Tosaint Ricketts, and Jonathan Osorio return from Gold Cup duty, while Nick Hagglund has recovered from MCL surgery.

Kill ‘em with Pace

Playing on the road against a top side, one could expect the Rapids to bunker and absorb pressure for the majority of the match. To create chances, the Reds will have to rely on their pace to get in behind.

Raheem Edwards and Tosaint Ricketts have speed to burn and could prove to be valuable assets on the night. Without the injured Shkelzen Gashi, the Rapids will be without their most dangerous wing threat. Kevin Doyle, while an accomplished forward, is not going to be challenging the likes of Chris Mavinga in a footrace. If Toronto can keep the ball moving from side to side, they should be able to find success on Saturday night.
