Post-Match Reaction: Reds Regroup Following Difficult Loss

Drew Moor vs. Orlando City

A pair of controversial calls and an injury to starting goalkeeper Clint Irwin were the major talking points to emerge from a tough 3-2 loss to Orlando City SC for the Reds.

Referee Ismail Elfath's decision to not award TFC a penalty after Orlando keeper Joe Bendik hauled down Jordan Hamilton in the box was compounded by a call in the eighth minute of added time that awarded the host's a penalty. Kaka converted the spot kick in the 100th minute to power Orlando to three points.

It's not clear how severe Irwin's quad injury is and the Charlotte native will undergo further scans on Sunday. Greg Vanney, Drew Moor and Alex Bono spoke to the media following the match. Here's what they had to say.
Greg Vanney
Thoughts on game

“It was not cool it was hot, guys were cramping and a number of things went on during that game so first and foremost congrats to them [Orlando City]. I’m not here to debate whether or not the last one was a PK or not any different what happened on the other side. It was a hard fought battle and with the guys leaving everything out there it hurts to finish like that.”

On the Hamilton no call

“I have to say, we feel pretty hard done by. I’m not here to debate whether the last one was a penalty or not, but it was no different to when [Orlando keeper] Joe [Bendik] pulled down our guy in the box in the second half. We need to call the same thing on both sides. Let’s be consistent about it.”

Thoughts on it going to the last minute

“I was told that prior to the goal today we had not given up any goals in the final 15 minutes of a game. I believe every game goes down to the end and everyone is trying to win the game no one is sitting back just waiting to tie the game. There were times where I believe that they [Orlando City] could of put us into a deeper hole in the first half and we could of done the same in the second half and we didn’t so it came down to the wire.”

On Clint Irwin's injury

“I don’t know how long it’s going to take, initially it seems like a quad injury of some sort, the turf is pretty slippery underneath it all and I think he went to hit and maybe slipped or something as he struck the ball and got himself into an awkward position, so I don’t have the all the details and I’m sure it’s going to take an assessment after things calm down and we’ll see where he’s at.”

On Jordan Hamilton's performance tonight

“Jordan had a good game. He’s a kid with a lot of talent, a lot of ability, and a lot of athleticism. He’s got good size to work with. He and Cyle [Larin] grew up in the same era and are similar players in a lot of ways. These games are important for Jordan [Hamilton] and these minutes because he’s learning on the fly right now, but I thought he got himself into some good positions and he had some good moments and he was in the right place in the right time to score the goal there, so he keeps growing with every chance that he gets.”

Drew Moor
On perspective of the locker room

“It’s tough, with the effort and the way we fought and to get nothing out of the game it’s a hard pill to swallow.”

On the Julio Baptista foul that led to the game winner

“I haven’t seen a replay of it so I can’t say much about it but in the run of play I thought it was a soft call.”

On Alex Bono stepping in for Clint Irwin

“It’s a tough position for him to step in, I thought he did a great job. I heard him the entire time on the field and you can tell he’s a confident goal keeper.”

Alex Bono
On coming in for Irwin
“I thought I did alright, it was my first time and it’s an honor and a great opportunity until Clint (Irwin) gets back but it’s my chance to prove that I belong on this team, in this system, and in this league.”
On going against Kaka

“He’s a top class player, world class player, a golden group ball winner at one point obviously an honor to go up against him and I wish we could’ve gotten the better of him.”

On the controversy surrounding the penalty

“I’d have to take a better look at it and I’m not really sure how everything transpired, heat of the moment kind of thing, tough call for the official and we’ll look it over and determine it from there."

The Reds travel to Vancouver on Sunday to prepare for the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship final against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
