Santos Stumbles In Mexico

Santos Laguna

Santos Laguna stumbled in a bid to make the Mexican playoffs on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 to fellow CONCACAF Champions League club Morelia in Torreon.

Toronto FC or Morelia could face Santos Laguna in the quarterfinals of the 2011/12 CCL in March. The draw is to be held in New York on Tuesday, November 8.

Tuesday’s match was a restart from a Week Six game in the Mexican Apertura that was temporarily abandoned due to a shooting outside Estadio Corona at the 40th minute. The teams picked up from there on Tuesday, level at nil as they were during the initial match stoppage.

Yasser Corona and Rafael Marquez Lugo scored for Morelia, a team desperate for a victory to remain in the hunt for an Apertura knockout spot to be decided after this weekend’s matches. The top eight teams in the tournament will advance to the playoffs in the first of two Mexican tournaments played each season.

On the continent, Morelia, Toronto, Seattle and Isidro Metapan finished second in their respective Champions League groups. The clubs will be paired with one of Santos Laguna, Monterrey, Pumas or Los Angeles – all CCL group winners – in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. Teams that emerged from the same group can not draw each other in the quarterfinals (i.e. Toronto and Pumas).
