Recap: 2018 GA Cup Day One

Day one of the 2018 GA Cup is in the books. Here is a quick recap of the day's events. 


U-17 Division

The Toronto FC Academy U-17 (2002) team registered their first victory in the GA Cup qualifying event after beating Columbus Crew SC 2-0.


Jaden Nelson, who signed recently with TFC II for the 2019 season, was the man of the match scoring two goals and putting pressure on Columbus Crew defense. Nelson put TFC in the lead on the 29th minute on a counterattacking move leaving the defenders behind and firing it into the bottom left corner.


In the 63rd minute, Nelson scored again with a right footed shot inside the box in the bottom right corner.


Elsewhere, the Houston Dynamo topped the Chicago Fire 2-1 and FC Dallas knocked off Sporting Kanas City 3-0.

U-15 Division

The Toronto FC Academy U-15 (2004) team kicked off their first game of the 2018-19 Generation Adidas Cup qualifying event with a convincing 3-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City.


SKC came out strong, opening the scoring in the 8th minute.


After conceding the goal, the Reds started to control more of the ball trying to open space on the SKC defense. Luca Accettola scored for TFC in the 12th minute finishing a cross with a right footed shot into the left corner.


Shortly after, Hugo Mbonge found the scoresheet on a counterattack putting the Reds into the lead.


Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty scored a second-half goal curving the ball into the top left corner adeptly using the outside of his foot.


Elsewhere, the Chicago Fire defeated the Columbus Crew 2-0 and the Columbus Crew knocked off Minnesota United 1-0.

The action continues tomorrow as the U-17s kickoff at 9:00 AM against the Chicago Fire. The U-15s go at 2:30 PM against Minnesota United.
