The Toronto FC Academy U-17 (2001) team wrapped up their GA Cup qualifying campaign with an undefeated weekend. The Reds finished top of the Central Region Group standings and for the fifth consecutive year earned a spot in the coveted Champions Division at the GA Cup Final later this spring.
The team opened up the weekend with a tough matchup against a very strong FC Dallas side. Jacen Russell-Rowe scored in the second half and the Reds put together a great defensive effort to hold off FCD for the 1-0 victory.
The second match of the weekend featured a U-17 version of this week’s Champions League clash between TFC and the Colorado Rapids. The Reds would prevail on penalty kicks 4-2 following a 2-2 draw. Ryan Robinson and Theo Corbeanu had the goals for the Reds.
After an off day on Sunday, the boys were back on the pitch on Monday as they looked to close out their undefeated qualifying campaign against the Columbus Crew. The Reds came out firing on all cylinders with Antonio Carlini and Theo Corbeanu scoring to give the Reds a 2-0 halftime lead. The Crew pulled one back before Ijah Halley restored the two-goal lead late into the second half. The Reds held on for the 3-1 victory to complete the undefeated campaign.
Between the two qualifying weekends, the U-17s went 5-0-1-0 outscoring their opponents 13-5. The GA Cup Final will take place at the end of March and the Reds will feature in a group with top international competition for a chance at the GA Cup title.
The TFC Academy U-15 (2003) team was also in Houston this past weekend. The Reds dropped a tough match to the Columbus Crew on Friday before dropping a tight 1-0 game to the Chicago Fire. The Reds then fell at the hands of the Houston Dynamo affiliate team 2-1 on Monday with Kobe Franklin scoring for the Reds.
