3 Keys to Toronto vs. Portland Timbers

SEA Three Keys

The Reds are back home to take on the Timbers. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys to the match for Saturday night’s match vs. Portland.
Fight with the Front Four

Despite their middling status in the Western Conference table, the Timbers remain a potent attacking force as they lead the conference with 42 goals.

Pulling the strings in the midfield, Diego Valeri has been one of the more dangerous creative players in MLS, but is more than capable of finishing off a move on all on his own as well. Out wide, the duo of Darlington Nagbe and Sebastián Blanco can wreak havoc with their pace and skill, which will put the onus on Toronto’s wingbacks to play an honest role defensively. And if Fanendo Adi plays up top, the Nigerian can cause all sorts of problems with his big frame and deft finishing touch.

The Reds will need to be cautious and limit the influence of Portland’s front four if they are to get back in the win column on Saturday.

Central Dominance

Especially at BMO Field, visiting teams tend to pack things in centrally. Toronto thrive when given space in the middle of the park, but space may well be at a premium come Saturday night.

Sebastian Giovinco has shown a tendency to drift into the midfield to collect the ball and jumpstart the attack, but it can also draw the forward out of position. The likes of Michael Bradley and Marky Delgado will have a key role to play in opening up space for the Reds so that they can maintain their shape and punish the Timbers in the final third.

Attack, Attack, Attack

So you know about Portland’s conference leading attack, but their defence has been suspect.

Conceding 39 goals on the season, the Timbers have had their fair share of struggles on the other end of the field. However, defender Liam Ridgewell is back into the fold, which could prove to be a massive addition.

Even so, Toronto will look to re-establish their dominance after a couple of frustrating draws against Colorado and D.C. and get back to the ruthless finishing that was on display in their last home win against NYCFC.
