3 Keys to Toronto vs. New York City FC

MIN Three Keys

The Reds are back at it after a two-week break. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys to the match as TFC head to the Big Apple to take on NYCFC.
Big City, Big Player

Often the smallest player on the pitch, the Atomic Ant has done anything but shrink under the big city lights in New York.

Sebastian Giovinco has made a habit of saving his best work for Yankee Stadium, recording a pair of hat tricks in the Bronx, most recently in Toronto’s last trip to the Bronx, a 5-0 win in the second leg of the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Without Altidore, the onus will fall on Giovinco’s shoulders even more so than in past trips to New York, but if past results are any indication, Seba will be up for the challenge.

Size Does Matter

The pitch, that is.

Yankee Stadium’s unique dimensions can completely change the game plan for opposing teams, but the Reds have made the most of the smaller field in past matches.

Under Patrick Vieira, New York continue to be a team that likes to build out of the back with a slow build in possession. Toronto will look to press NYCFC into mistakes along the backline, which could lead to some big chances up front for the Reds.

Limit Villa and Harrison

TFC will be without their dynamic duo, but the Pigeons have one of their own.

At age 35, David Villa has shown no signs of slowing down on the heels of his 2016 MVP season. With 12 goals through 18 games, the Spanish legend is as dangerous as ever on and off the ball.

On the flank, 20-year-old Jack Harrison continues to blossom as one of the more promising attacking talents in the league. Quick and crafty with the ball at his feet, the likes of Drew Moor and Chris Mavinga will have to be locked in for the full 90 minutes to keep this duo off the scoresheet.
