3 Keys to Toronto vs. Philadelphia Union

3 keys vs. PHI

The Reds travel to Talen Energy Stadium this weekend to battle it out with the Philadelphia Union. Here are the Benjamin Moore three keys to the match.

Who will play at right back?

Steven Beitashour has been out of training this week after suffering a concussion in last weekend’s opener. Head Coach Greg Vanney is unlikely to change the formation from his favoured 3-5-2 if his starting right back cannot go. Look for either Marky Delgado or Tsubasa Endoh to step up in Beitashour’s place.

Forward Involvement

Getting the powerful duo of Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore more involved will be a key to this matchup. Playing against a 4-3-2-1 like they did last week against Real Salt Lake, and like they will this week against the Union, it really causes congestion in the middle of the park. There just is not much room to open up channels for the two strikers.

Each player has had success against the Union in the past. Giovinco has five goals in five games against the U, while Altidore has three goals in six matches.

It will be crucial for the Reds to open up space and find room behind the lines for either player to find the ball and make proper outlets.

Service from the flanks

Last weekend, Toronto FC only completed 18% of their crosses. That is just not good enough, especially when the game is projected to be so congested in the midfield. Regardless of who starts on the right, both they and Justin Morrow need to be able to capitalise on the space that should be available with proper balls into the middle of the park.
