Get to Know: New York City

Toronto FC defeated the Philadelphia Union in impressive style on Wednesday night to advance to the club's first ever conference semi-final. The Reds will now open up the two-game home and home series against New York City FC on Sunday. Here is what you need to know about New York City FC:

2016 Season: What Sophomore Slump?

New York City put together an impressive 2nd season in the MLS going 15-10-9 good for 2nd place in the East. City improved from the 37 points they put up in their debut season. A big part of their improved record was the play of Frank Lampard. Lampard had a season to forget last year, but when healthy this season made significant contributions to the lineup. Andre Pirlo also stepped up in his first full season in the MLS. Another big reason for their success this year was their play away from Yankee Stadium. New York City put up the best record on the road in the MLS.

Key Player: David Villa

The Spanish superstar put up an MVP caliber season. He finished second in the Golden Boot race to Bradley Wright-Phillips with 23 goals and added four assists. Villa has also had major success against Toronto FC in his short tenure in the MLS. The striker has scored six times in the five games he has played against the Reds.

Unsung Hero: Khiry Shelton

In New York City it’s hard for anyone not named Villa, Lampard or Pirlo to get any attention. Even rookie Jack Harrison has outshined the 23-year-old forward. However, Khiry Shelton has been having an under the radar season. The second overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft has four goals and nine assists in 22 games this season. He has been mainly used as an offensive weapon off the bench for Patrick Vieira’s side. Look for Shelton to be a dangerous substitute against Toronto.

Coach: Patrick Vieira

The legendary French midfielder is in his first season as the coach of New York City FC. It is Vieira’s first time coaching at a first team level.
