3 Keys to TFC vs. Orlando City

3 keys vs. Houston

Toronto FC clinched a spot in the 2016 MLS Playoffs with their 1-1 draw against the Philadelphia Union last weekend. The Reds are now in a three-way tie for top spot in the Eastern Conference and will be looking to take back sole possession of first place when they host Orlando City on Wednesday.

The two teams have split their season series this year, with the Reds taking the most recent matchup 2-1. Tosaint Ricketts and Jozy Altidore both scored to lead the Reds to victory at Camping World Stadium in August.

Orlando is currently on the outside of the MLS playoff picture, sitting three points behind sixth place D.C. United. The Lions will need to get a result on Wednesday if they have any hope of making the playoffs in 2016.

Here are three keys to the match:

Better Start

Toronto FC has conceded early first half goals in both of its last two games. Fortunately, the Reds have been able to mount a comeback and salvage points in each of those games.

“We definitely need to start better,” said keeper Clint Irwin, “It’s important for us to get the first goal and get on top of the game.”

The Reds have yet to win this season when the opponent scores first going 0-8-8, compared to an undefeated 13-0-1 when TFC opens the scoring.

It will be imperative for the Reds to get off to a better start in front of the BMO field faithful this Wednesday.

Defensive Record

Orlando City comes into the match with the worst defensive record in the MLS this season. The team has conceded a league high 57 goals, 12 of which have come in the last three matches.

Historically, Orlando has not fared well at BMO field either. Last season the Lions went 0-2-0 and conceded nine goals to the Reds.

The Reds will need to continue their scoring form against Orlando on Wednesday.

Cyle Larin

The Brampton, Ontario native has put together an impressive sophomore campaign in the MLS. Larin has scored 14 goals, including one in each of the previous games against Toronto FC this season.

Larin has been lethal this season, he has scored on just under 50% of his shots on goal. Therefore, the Reds will need to make an effort at closing off the service to the Canadian international if they want to keep the Orlando offence at bay.
