The Kia Toronto FC Academy kicked off the second round of Generation adidas Cup East region qualifying with a 1-0 victory against hosts Orlando City.
Midfielder Kota Sakurai had the lone goal of the match. Sakurai pounced on a rebound following a big save by the Orlando City keeper and headered it into the left corner to give the Reds the lead just before halftime.
The squad had a few other good opportunities throughout the match, including an effort by midfielder Ethan Beckford that hit the post and a header late on by forward Ayo Akinola that rung the crossbar.
Goalkeeper Gianluca Catalano picked up the shutout for the Reds.
TFC Academy sits atop of the table after four matches. They will now take on New England Revolution on Saturday, February 13, followed by the New York Red Bulls on Monday, February 15, to wrap up qualifying.
