Toronto FC Acquires Defender Josh Williams

Toronto FC announced Friday that the club has acquired defender Josh Williams off waivers. As per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.


"Adding Josh gives us another starting caliber player on our roster,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “He brings five plus years of MLS experience including playoff experience.”


Williams, 27, joins Toronto FC after most recently playing for New York City FC where he appeared and started in five matches. Prior to being acquired by New York City FC, he spent five seasons (2010 – 2014) with Columbus Crew SC where he made a combined 76 appearances, registering four goals and four assists across MLS league play, MLS Playoffs, CONCACAF Champions League and US Open Cup.


Prior to being signed by Columbus Crew SC, Williams spent his entire collegiate career at Cleveland State University. In four seasons, he appeared and started in 74 matches for the Vikings, scoring 12 goals and added eight assists. Williams captained the Vikings during his junior and senior seasons. As a senior, Williams was named Division I All-Ohio and All-Horizon League First Team. He was also named to the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team as a freshman.
