Gold Cup Recap: Canada and United States open campaigns

Larin Gold Cup

The 2015 Gold Cup is underway with Canada and the United States completing their first group stage games in Texas and California respectively.

Canada and El Salvador played to a 0-0 draw at the StubHub Center in Carson, CA on Wednesday night.

Benito Floro opted for an interesting midfield mix, choosing to sit Jonathan Osorio and Russell Teibert in favour of Kyle Bekker and Adam Straith. Julian de Guzman failed a fitness test prior to the match.

Cyle Larin, the 2015 MLS SuperDraft first overall pick, missed an open net after deking around La Selecta goalkeeper Derby Carrillo in the 35th minute. That proved to be Canada’s best chance of the game.

El Salvador, backed by a partisan crowd, launched a flurry on the Canadian goal just before halftime but they couldn’t find a way past Kenny Stamatopoulos. The second half was rather dour in comparison, with niether team mounting much of a concerted offensive attack in the final 45 minutes.

The other game in Group B saw Jamaica and Costa Rica play to a 2-2 draw. Canada plays Jamaica (6:30 pm ET/Sportsnet and Sportsnet World) on Saturday night in Houston.

The United States opened their Gold Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Honduras at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, TX on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t the most complete effort from the reigning CONCACAF champions, but two goals from Clint Dempsey was enough to ensure a positive beginning for Jurgen Klinsmann and his squad.

Jozy Altidore's well placed strike led to Dempsey's fisrt marker via a rebound. TFC captain Michael Bradley assisted on Dempsey’s second goal of the game.

The United States is back in action on Friday night against Haiti (8:30 pm ET/Sportsnet World) in Foxborough, MA.
