Training Notes: Reds Prepare For LA Test

Marky Delgado vs. D.C. United

Toronto FC returned to the training ground on Tuesday following a week that saw the Reds lose, win and draw.

Though Greg Vanney expressed disappointment at not being able to secure nine points from the three game homestand, it wasn’t a setback in his opinion.

"We left some opportunities on the table,” said Vanney following training.  The Reds were unable to beat Bill Hamid last Saturday, but they also conceded zero times.

"Overall I thought we played well,” Vanney continued. “It's important that we score goals so that we can open teams up."

Vanney pointed to the strong play of Marky Delgado and Collen Warner in recent games as a positive sign going forward.

“The U20 World Cup gave me a huge confidence boost.” said Delgado, who represented the United States in New Zealand. Delgado also credited his relationship with Vanney and assistant head coach Robin Fraser.

“They believe in me. They’re the ones that gave me my first professional contract. They know what I can do on the field.”

Warner slotted in for the injured Benoit Cheyrou for Saturday’s game and registered a man of the match performance. Cheyrou continues to deal with a calf injury, but Vanney indicated the Frenchman could play against the Los Angeles Galaxy this weekend.

With Warner excelling in front of TFC's back four there’s no reason to rush Cheyrou back before he’s ready.

“LA is always a special place to play,” said Warner. TFC will be without four starters (five if Cheyrou doesn’t play) for the match.

“As you’ve seen some guys have had to step in and I think they’ve been tremendous,” Warner continued.

“Marky has been really great since he’s come back from the World Cup. So has Warren [Creavalle] every time he’s been called upon. Within the squad there’s a lot of confidence in everyone to get the job done.”

The Reds will fly out to Los Angeles on Thursday morning.

Injury Notes

Benoit Cheyrou remains questionable with a calf injury. Vanney believes he could play in California.

Chris Konopka was given a maintenance day off the field from the coaching staff.

Steven Caldwell and Clement Simonin didn’t train with the first team today but they did partake in individual workouts.

Bright Dike returned from his loan spell with the San Antonio Scorpions. He won’t be able to play for TFC until July 8th, when the transfer window reopens.
