Three takeaways from TFC's 2-0 win in Orlando

Jozy Altidore vs. Orlando

That was one game they needed to have.

Toronto FC left Florida in good spirits on Monday after defeating Orlando City SC 2-0 at the Citrus Bowl on Sunday night .

Jozy Altidore recorded his third and fourth goals of the season after being held off the scoresheet following his brace in the season opener.

Greg Vanney and his staff put together the perfect game plan on the road.

“The guys worked incredibly hard to work through their assignments over the course of the game really locked them down,” said Vaney following the game.

“We had some opportunities out of transition, not a ton of possession tonight but the group was focused on the defending side. This is a great defensive foundation to continue to build from. It was for me a clinical road win."

Here are three takeaways from TFC’s second win of the season.

Hagglund Responds To Adversity

Nick Hagglund had a game to forget in Dallas. The second-year defender was caught out twice by Fabian Castillo in the first half.

Hagglund later moved to centre-back after starting the game on the right. Hagglund was slotted into the middle beside Damien Perquis against Orlando and the Reds managed to secure their first clean sheet of the season.

It was Hagglund’s best performance of the season.

“One thing about Nick is he is eternally positive,” said Vanney.

“You know last week after the first half after the weather break happened he was clearly upset with himself and everything that had gone on. He is a positive kid who has ability to bounce back. We saw it in that game, he had an excellent second half against Dallas so that gave us the confidence that he was ready to step in and play this game and do the job that he needs to and I thought he was very good.“

INTERVIEWS: Greg Vanney | Michael Bradley | Jozy Altidore

Altidore Gets Back On The Scoresheet

It was a special night for the American striker, who was playing in front of 40 to 50 family members.

“It was nice to play in front of them,” said Altidore.

One thing we were looking for on Sunday night was improved chemistry between Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco. We saw it, especially in the second half.

But it was the team’s defensive performance that stood out for the 25-year-old.

“We gave them nothing,” he said. “We got behind the ball and whenever the ball came close to our areas we were tough and aggressive. That’s the standard we have to have.”

After dominating possession in previous matches, games that the Reds lost, it was a different story on Sunday. Orlando enjoyed a 29.8% edge in possession, but that didn’t matter. Jose Mourinho would be proud.

Bradley Welcomes Pressure

This wasn’t a must win game by any stretch, but when the schedule was released Sunday night’s game was one in which TFC had to like their chances.

The seven game road trip to start the season is almost over. If the Reds can get a result in Philadelphia we’re looking at a pretty successful start to the season.

But just a few days ago the sharks were circling. Captain Michael Bradley knows what playing in a market as passionate as this means.

"Part of this city, this market is pressure,” said Bradley. “I welcome that, the group welcomes it."

“We’re six games into the season and we have six points. When we talk about this idea of getting points on the road, we’re doing okay."
