Player Of The Week: Benoit Cheyrou

Benoit Cheyrou player of the week

He should have been sent off for a studs up challenge late in the game against Chicago according to Simon Borg, but Benoit Cheyrou evaded discipline from referee Juan Guzman.

Cheyrou’s tackle on David Accam didn’t warrant a card of any colour according to Guzman and thankfully so. TFC was already down a player and Cheyrou was having a hell of a game.

The 33-year-old recorded his first MLS goal in the 3-2 loss and is the TFC player of the week.

Cheyrou helped create Sebastian Giovinco’s goal in the 20th minute, threading a perfect through ball to Ashtone Morgan. The goal was the product of a 17(!) pass buildup.

Cheyrou helped create his first MLS tally by intercepting a wayward pass as Chicago tried to break forward. Giovinco’s wonderful pass was finished off by the former Marseille star and is a contender for Goal Of The Week.

Though the combination play between Cheyrou, Giovinco and Michael Bradley was promising at times throughout Saturday’s match, head coach Greg Vanney is hoping to see more of a killer instinct in the attack.

“Going forward I think we need to continue that in their final third and create goal scoring chances off of it,” said Vanney following the match.

“I think we broke down sort of the initial pressure and got into their half of their field, we tended then to kind of slow play down and they were able to recover and we didn’t get enough off of those opportunities. [Giovinco] was involved, he dropped in the midfield a little more, he combined with everyone a little more.

“I thought [Cheyrou] likewise did a good job of connecting. [Bradley] started attacks and kind of moved into the attack. We need to progress forward with some bite to try to finish opportunities.”

Capitalizing in the final third more often will require the type of runs like the one Cheyrou made on the second goal. He’s proven through four games that he still has the legs for it.
