Player Of The Week: Jordan Hamilton

Jordan Hamilton

It didn’t take long for Jordan Hamilton to pick up where he left off in the USL.

Last season the Canadian teenager scored five goals in 11 appearances for the Wilmington Hammerheads before being loaned to Trofense, a club team in Portugal.

The 19-year-old will be one the focal points of Toronto FC II and proved how dangerous he will be in 2015 very quickly in Charleston.

There’s no doubt the ball sent by defender Clement Simonin was special, but Hamilton had a lot of work to do to finish the play off. Just eight minutes in, the Academy graduate showed why he could make the jump to the first team this season.

The Junior Reds went on to take a 2-0 lead thanks to a goalkeeping error by the Battery’s Odisnel Cooper. Jason Bent’s squad couldn’t hold on to the lead, however, and a late marker by Taylor Mueller secured three points for the home side.

In the end the result wasn’t a major shock. Toronto FC II is a very young team that will go through the motions during their first year in the USL. But there are big reasons to follow the ride, Hamilton chief among them.

Hamilton, Mo Babouli, the other goal scorer and Mark-Anthony Kaye pressed the Battery defence throughout the match, giving them little time to do anything other than kick and pray the ball found Dane Kelly up top. The high pressing strategy nearly resulted in a second goal from Hamilton, this time with the setup coming from Ashtone Morgan.

Better defending on set pieces from TFC II and we’re talking about the first win in franchise history.

There are many reasons to watch this team on a weekly basis. Observing growth of Hamilton, one the club’s brightest prospects, is certainly near the top of the list.

Toronto FC II travel east for a fixture against FC Montreal at 12:30 PM ET on Saturday. Watch the game via livestream on torontofc.ca.
