FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – With 32,766 on hand at Gillette Stadium, the third largest stand-alone crowd for the club on their grounds, the New England Revolution returned the favor to their supporters, capping their season with a 1-0 victory over Toronto FC.

As has been the custom for a good part of the Revs 17-win campaign, MVP candidate Lee Nguyen scored another game-winner, his ninth of the season.

The goal was not without controversy, as Jose Goncalves’ pass up the left side to streaking Chris Tierney was initially flagged for offside.

Some players stopped on the play, Toronto players had their hands up, but Tierney hesitantly continued in and as he approached the backline he found Nguyen who faked out defenders and dragged a shot into the corner with his right foot in the 36th minute.

After much debate it was determined that the referee, despite replays showing otherwise, had waived off the offside, allowing the play to continue.

The strike was Nguyen’s 18th goal of the season and added a bit more hype to his MLS MVP campaign.

Toronto FC were without the services of Jermain Defoe and Jonathan Osorio and although the backline, led by the efforts of Steven Caldwell and Doneil Henry, played well for much of the game, the club’s flow seemed to lack consistency throughout.

When they were able to put chances together, they were met by Bobby Shuttleworth, who had four big saves in his eighth clean sheet of the season, including a nice effort in the 75th minute on a Luke Moore header from point blank range.

New England now must wait for the conclusion of Sunday night’s match between Sporting Kansas City and New York Red Bulls before they know their Eastern Conference semifinal opponent, but as the second seed they will play leg one on their opponents’ pitch next weekend.
