Recapping Week 30 In MLS

BradleyLA

Houston’s playoff chances were dealt a critical blow this weekend.

Thierry Henry delivered the bad news, as he has so often throughout an unparalleled career. Henry’s goal in the 47th minute powered the New York Red Bulls to a 1-0 win over the Dynamo at Red Bull Arena.

The scoreline wasn’t indicative of New York’s dominant performance, with Henry and Bradley Wright-Phillips forming a deadly combination for what seems like the hundredth time this season.

Poor finishing prevented the Red Bulls from piling on, but considering they lost Tim Cahill late to a red card it’s a big result. The win gives New York some much needed breathing room in the East, where playoff positioning remains turbulent.

As for Houston, their playoff hopes are likely over. Four consecutive wins and a lot of help could see them sneak in but that’s highly unlikely with interconference play wrapped up.

Instead the Dynamo can serve as spoilers on Wednesday night when they take on Toronto FC at BMO Field.

“I think Houston at the end of the day really has nothing to lose at this point,” TFC head coach Greg Vanney said on Monday. “I imagine they’ll be fairly relaxed.”

A relaxed team is a dangerous one, especially with nerves at a high.

Rosales rescues Vancouver

The race for Canada’s spot in next year’s Champions League took yet another twist this weekend, with Vancouver leapfrogging TFC thanks to a gigantic 2-0 win over FC Dallas.

Vancouver leads Toronto by three points, but the Reds have a game in hand and lead the Whitecaps in wins.

The win also puts Carl Robinson’s side back into a playoff spot. Mauro Rosales resembled the player we’ve seen for most of the season. Recently, however, his form has dipped. His best game in weeks came at a critical juncture in Vancouver’s season.

Rosales assisted on both of Sebastian Fernandez’s goals, helping the Whitecaps secure a 2-0 win.

"I thought it was his best game since he's been here, and I think sometimes we’re very lucky to have him," Robinson said following the game. "I wanted to get him off a little bit earlier but he was enjoying the game so much. He said 'five minutes,' and I let five minutes go, and he said 'another five minutes,' and then another. He was excellent. His technical ability is second to none and he had a massive influence on the game."

Goal of the week

Robbie Keane’s sensational volley against TFC was one of many great goals this weekend. Robert Earnshaw’s game tying chip against the Union was terrific. Truth be told we’re suckers for a good chip in these parts, so this week’s winner is Seattle’s Marco Pappa. The backheel to set it up didn’t hurt either.
