Recapping The Week That Was In MLS

Bradley-Tor-Sea-03152014

If you’re a fan of draws, Week 2 was a dream. And though they don’t have the sex appeal of a 5-4 barnburner, several 1-1 games were worth watching this weekend.

Week 1 was great and all, but we’re actually back and fully into the flow of a new season. Rise and grind.

Our tour through the league starts in Seattle, where Jermain Defoe won player of the week honours thanks to an impressive two goal performance. Defoe’s debut was a 10 on the success scale, but more important than personal honours was the result.

In the past, securing a 2-1 win on the road has been quite difficult for Toronto FC. And while there is certainly room for improvement - as evidenced by the possession numbers and a squirrelly second half - three points and a confidence boost were massive takeaways from the Emerald City.

Vancouver almost squandered a golden opportunity on the road versus Chivas, who were reduced to 10-men just 13 minutes in. That didn’t hold the Californian side back. They took the lead right before halftime.

The Whitecaps were on the brink of an embarrassing defeat, but Kekuta Manneh salvaged a point for the visitors with his marker in the 80th minute. Crisis averted.

In Santa Clara, Victor Bernardez was the hero for San Jose.

He scored twice, including five minutes into added time to rescue a point versus Real Salt Lake. A 3-3 scoreline was indicative of just how wild this game was.

Toronto FC will travel to Utah on March 29th for a date with the defending Western Conference champions.

Elsewhere, Will Bruin’s goal in the 40th minute lifted the Houston Dynamo past Montreal in a game that was much closer than initially expected. Gaston Fernandez was the star in Portland for the second straight week, saving Caleb Porter’s side from missing out on a point against Chicago.

Sporting KC was minutes away from notching their first win of the season only to have Matt Hedges and Dallas steal three points from the defending champions at the death.

Didn’t we say 1-1 draws could be fun?

D.C United, Toronto’s opponent for Saturday’s home opener, were on a bye this week.

The starting XI that could make the most waves on a soccer field is as follows in a 4-2-3-1 formation:

GK: Snorlax; Machamp, Electabuzz, Blastoise, Hypno; Mr. Mime, Poliwrath; Charizard, Mewtwo, Gyarados; Dragonite

We believe that squad has the perfect blend of size, strength, skill and mental character to advance deep into a hypothetical tournament.

Have your eyes glazed over? Good, because that’s it for now.
