Preseason In Florida: Prepping For D.C. United

Toronto-DC-02052014-620

After twelve straight days of practice, Toronto FC will walk on the IMG Academy pitch tomorrow for their first preseason friendly. TFC has done all the right things in the off-season. Not only have they signed some major players, unlike in the past, they have kept a core of players to build from.  Their opposition tomorrow is also a team in transition, DC United had a 2013 they would rather not remember.  The squad was depleted due to injuries, and despite all their young, attacking talent, could not buy a goal.

Last Year’s Records:

DC United: 3 W, 7 D, 24 L (24 GF, 59 GA)
Toronto FC: 6 W, 11 D, 17 L (30 GF, 47 GA)

Off-Season Additions:

DC United: Nana Attakora, Sean Franklin, Eddie Johnson, Davy Arnaud, Fabian Espindola, Bobby Boswell, Steve Birnbaum, & More.
Toronto FC: Michael Bradley, Dwayne De Rosario, Justin Morrow, Gilberto, Nick Hagglund, Jackson, Bradley Orr, Jermain Defoe, Jordan Hamilton, & More

The Questions:

1. Who is Michael Bradley’s Midfield partner?

Assuming that Toronto FC will be playing a 4-4-2, Jonathan Osorio, Matias Laba, Jeremy Hall, and Kyle Bekker are all fighting for one spot in the starting XI. Through 12 days of training, Ryan Nelsen has yet to show his hand, but on Wednesday night we will get to get an idea who will be the best fit beside ‘The General’.

2. Is the backline secure in the final minutes of a game?

Toronto FC’s achilles heel last season was conceding goals in the final minutes of the game. In preseason, so far, Adrian Lamb has focused fitness training around making smart decisions while tired.  We will start to see if the training has paid off when a game is on the line.

3. Can the team feed the Strikers?

Since both Gilberto & Jermain Defoe signed with Toronto FC, skeptics have all asked the same question: ‘Will they get any service?’  On Wednesday night we will start to see De Rosario, Osorio, Rey and company can find the strikers up top, and create chances.
