COACHES' BREAKDOWN: Nick Hagglund is what you get when you combine extreme athleticism good defensive technique. Described as "a monster" to deal with, the Ohio native is a solid, physical player who wins every ball that comes near him. Far from being a thug, however, Hagglund has the skill to actually take over possession, and has good enough feet that he can make the outlet pass either short or long. With his pace, Hagglund is very difficult to beat in the open field, and he is a force to be reckoned with in the air. Hagglund's athletic ability has meant, however, that he can rely on it too much to fix defensive breakdowns, and he'll need to learn to read the game better and influence attackers' behavior on their approach. But the most important thing for Hagglund to do is maybe develop an ego, which he's somehow managed to avoid despite his athletic gifts. "He needs to realize he belongs in MLS," one coach says. "I don't think he realizes how good he is."
