Williams Eyes TFC Return

Toronto FC centre back Dicoy Williams hasn’t played in a first team football match since June 10, 2011. On international duty with Jamaica that day, Williams suffered a torn ACL that has kept him out of action for over a year.

An appearance could be near for the 25-year old defender, but it may come at the expense of a teammate who suffered a similar fate last season, just weeks earlier.

Central defender Adrian Cann left the match Saturday with an injury, the extent of which will not be clear until an MRI is performed later this week in Toronto, head coach Paul Mariner confirmed to Toronto FC TV after training Monday in Houston.

That potentially creates an opening for Williams, who was part of a 19-man Toronto squad that traveled for the two-game road trip.

Williams admitted he was overjoyed to “see his name on the board” before Toronto departed from the Kia Training Ground in Downsview late last week.

“I’m going to take it from there, use this trip as a positive trip,” Williams said. “I was so happy, I called my mom … I’ve been thinking of nothing but putting on the Toronto FC jersey.”

What type of minutes Williams may see remains unclear. When Cann exited Saturday’s contest, Richard Eckersley shifted from his fullback role to play centre back as Williams was not on the first 18 in Kansas City. Mariner had intended to bring him along slowly, get him used to being around the first team.

Cann meanwhile, remains upbeat that a quick recovery is possible. It is the same attitude that won him plaudits from trainers and teammates as he worked tirelessly to recover from his own ACL tear to return inside a year.

Toronto meets Houston at the brand new BBVA Compass Stadium on Wednesday night. The match will be broadcast live on TSN and on radio, Sportsnet FAN 590, at 9 p.m. ET.
