Toronto FC released seven players on Wednesday following the 2011 Expansion Draft.

Defenders Kyle Davies, Demitrius Omphroy, Eddy Viator; midfielders Leandre Griffit, Matthew Gold, Gianluca Zavarise; and forward Javier Martina have all been waived according to MLSsoccer.com (later confirmed by the club).

Davies was acquired late in 2011 to shore up the centre back position after season ending injuries to Adrian Cann and Dicoy Williams. The former Los Angeles Galaxy player was unable to break into the first team, neither did Griffit, who was often injured after arriving from Columbus. Omphroy and Gold were selected in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and rarely featured in MLS matches. Viator was signed following the Gold Cup at midseason to provide Toronto more depth at the back, while Zavarise and Martina spent all of last season with Toronto from preseason onward.

Martina will be best remembered for a two-goal performance in the 2011 season opener, lifting Toronto to a 2-0 victory over Portland and winning MLS Goal of the Week in the process. Those were the first and last goals the Dutchman scored for Toronto in 1389 minutes of MLS action, including 15 starts. Zavarise started four MLS games for the Reds, featuring in 14 overall.

All seven were left unprotected for the Expansion Draft, but Montreal Impact - the league's newest team - did not select any players from Toronto.

The club has not offered a comment on these moves, however, head coach and technical director Aron Winter made it clear at his end of season press conference that with core players now in place, he is looking to add quality depth to the TFC squad.
