Canada Closes Round 2 Tuesday

Canada - Hart & JDG

Canada will go into its next World Cup qualifying match with some rare certainty. Regardless of what happens at BMO Field on Tuesday night (v. St. Kitts and Nevis, 7 p.m. ET), Stephen Hart’s men can look forward to another round of 2014 Brazil World Cup qualifying starting in June of 2012.

Those six additional games will be Canada’s reward for finishing atop Group D in the second round of CONCACAF World Cup qualification. In the next stage, the Canucks are in Group C with longtime rival Honduras, alongside Cuba and Panama.

Canada’s first game will be in Cuba on June 8, followed by a home date against 2010 World Cup participant Honduras four days later.

Hart knows that his squad can’t afford the type of display it showed on Friday in the 0-0 draw away to St. Kitts, if it is to get through the third round of qualification.

“We allowed (St. Kitts) too much space, especially on the wings and they were crossing balls into the box and putting us under pressure.”

Canada’s inability to put away weaker opponents – and invite disaster in the process – surfaced earlier in the tournament in another 0-0 draw against Puerto Rico at BMO Field.  The National Reds can’t afford such slip ups in the next phase of qualifying, where they have to finish in the top two of Group C in order for a chance at the fourth round where local giants Mexico and United States will make matters more difficult for Canada to gain a place in Brazil.
