Johnson & Martina Suffer Defeat

Ryan Johnson in action for Jamaica.

Canada enjoyed a winning start to the international calendar on Friday, with Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman playing 90 minutes in the 4-1 CONCACAF World Cup qualification trouncing of Round 2, Group D opponent St. Lucia. His club teammates Javier Martina and Ryan Johnson, however, shared an opposite fate.

Martina and Curacao were soundly defeated 5-2 away to Antigua and Barbuda in their Round 2, Group F World Cup qualifying match. The Toronto winger/forward was an unused substitute in the contest according to CONCACAF.com. Martina will get another chance to earn his first senior international cap (he has represented the Netherlands at youth level) on Tuesday at his hometown of Willemstad against Group F rival Haiti.

In another 5-2 final, Johnson and Jamaica were crushed in what the Jamaica Observer described as “debilitating high altitude” of Ecuador in an international friendly on Friday.  One press report had given Johnson credit for Jamaica’s second goal, but according to multiple sources it was scored by Demar Phillips.

Johnson entered the match for New York Reds Bulls midfielder Dane Richards at the 46th minute and played the second half for The Reggae Boyz.

While Canada (versus Puerto Rico) and Curacao take part in meaningful matches on September 6, Jamaica – already through to Round 3 of CONCACAF’s 2014 World Cup qualifying – will face another South American friendly test on Tuesday versus Colombia in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
