The first away league victory this season was there for Toronto FC to take.

But while the Reds couldn’t take advantage of all the breaks they received at RFK Stadium, former TFC star and Toronto native Dwayne De Rosario pounced on most of the many opportunities his old team presented him.

The result was a 3-3 draw and an ample helping of frustration for the visitors.

De Rosario scored three goals, including a late equalizer from the penalty spot and near the end of the match just missed what would have been a fourth goal — the only mistake the Canadian legend made all game.

“Dwayne has done well with any team he's played for, and he was able to prove it again today,” said Toronto midfielder Julian de Guzman, who scored his first MLS goal as a second-half substitution. “I think, to some extent, we gave too much respect the first play. The first goal, too much space was given off that free kick, nobody was marking him.

“A lot of the plays that were created from DC went through him and I don't think we were able to get enough [players] to him. I think in the second half, we reacted a bit better to some parts, but again, he was able to score two more goals.”

De Guzman has been De Rosario’s teammate both with TFC and the Canadian national team.

“It was kind of weird playing on the other side,” de Guzman said. “Normally, I'm used to playing with him when he's on the national team or TFC, but this time it was against him. He was able to prove himself again as one of the greatest players ever to play in MLS.”

United played with 10 men for 83 minutes after keeper Bill Hamid was shown a red card for his foul on Eric Avila just outside the box.

Toronto FC played better in the second half and were in position to win after a late goal but defender Andy Iro — who also made the mistake that set up De Rosario’s second goal — committed the foul that gave De Rosario his successful penalty kick.

“Strange game,” head coach Aron Winter said. “If you had watched the game, we had given away two goals, but after losing 1-0, then we came very well back. In the end, we were winning 3-2, it's impossible that you get a goal in 20 seconds, it's 3-3. It is unprofessional. The last week has been very heavy and tough for us because we traveled and played a lot of games. You could see in the final moments the guys were a little bit tired.”

There was controversy around de Guzman’s goal because DC was making a substitution for an injured player.

“Any moment you can get like that, you take advantage of it,” de Guzman said. “Many of the best teams in the world — how should I put it? — cheat when they have the chance to do something. It was a good opportunity for myself to find open space. It was smart of Ashtone [Morgan] who played it in for [Joao] Plata.

"At the same time, we were fighting for points. It was a tying goal, which gave us a lot more motivation to get the third one, but then we were able to let the three points slip away at the end there right after the goal was scored.”
