Training: Gordon Close & CB Mystery

Toronto FC players trained at BMO Field on Tuesday afternoon ahead of a flight to New York to face the Red Bulls Wednesday (8 p.m. ET on TSN).

Toronto, already injury depleted, had to deal with three more concerns this week following Saturday’s Nutrilite Canadian Championship triumph.

Defender Ty Harden, midfielder Julian de Guzman and forward Maicon Santos all left the 2-1 win over Vancouver at the weekend with ailments. Only Harden was able to make use of Tuesday’s training session with the first team. It's a good thing too as his is the position where Toronto has been hit hardest in recent weeks. Maicon and de Guzman are questionable ahead of Wednesday.

[inline_node:7030]Head coach Aron Winter was able to spare forward Alan Gordon (abductor strain) from action on Saturday with the cup final finishing in regulation time. Also left out of the equation were midfielder Jacob Peterson (hamstring) and centre back Nana Attakora (quadriceps strain).

Gordon and Peterson were active Tuesday and are reported to be on the list of those traveling, but both finished early to receive treatment. Attakora took part in some exercises but did not scrimmage with his teammates.  It is unlikely that the Canadian international will fly with the team this week.

Aside from Attakora, Toronto is still without Dicoy Williams (knee) and Adrian Cann (ACL – out for season) at centre back.

Losing Harden, Toronto finished the match Saturday with a centre back pairing of Richard Eckersley and Tony Tchani. Later in the game Doneil Henry came in to further neutralize space while Vancouver searched for the equalizer.

Eckersley, a natural fullback, is a near certainty to start again at the centre of TFC’s patchwork defence, but his partner remains a mystery as it could be any one of Harden, Tchani and Henry based on fitness. Danleigh Borman and Dan Gargan are expected to fill out the fullback slots.

Of Toronto’s two new signings, Torsten Frings continued to work with the first team in Toronto up until their departure for New York (Houston will follow this weekend). Frings will remain at BMO Field during the trip, where he will soon be joined by Danny Koevermans, who is completing the logistics of his move to Canada from the Netherlands.
