Omphroy Undeterred

Toronto FC defender Demitrius Omphroy is prepared to play wherever he is needed.

The fullback started as a forward at Tuesday’s Reserve League match where he netted a brace. Unfortunately, in the exciting back-and-forth encounter, Toronto was unable to get a point when a late strike by New England from a corner condemned the Reds' reserves to a 3-2 defeat.

Despite the loss, Omphroy’s contribution stands out as a bright spot.

“I was originally a striker, got converted to a right back,” said Omphroy on Thursday.

“I felt very relaxed at that position. It’s a little bit easy for me to take that on as a role.”

Scoring two goals in a game is special under any circumstances, but for Omphroy, it happened under the watchful eyes of his parents, who made the trip from California to see their 22-year old son put on a finishing clinic.

“I was able to come out and do pretty well in front of my parents … they were cheering and going crazy. After the game they gave me a big hug, it was all good.”

With nine injured players on the TFC squad, head coach Aron Winter will be pleased that Omphroy is in form, but he has yet to signal if the new reserve team hitman is an option ahead of Saturday’s match against a powerful Salt Lake side.

Omphroy remains undeterred.

“It’s whatever that’s best for the team. If I still have to play in the reserve team and get more games in then I’ll do that and keep working hard.”

The Reserve League match was filmed from the BMO Field press box and there is only this clip available of Omphroy's second goal, a cracking finish from 20-yards.
