Target Man Gordon

Alan Gordon

Alan Gordon is homesick.

The Toronto FC striker loves to see the jersey of one of his former teams.

Take the Los Angeles Galaxy, the team Gordon spent six seasons with and played for 99 times. The 6-foot-three striker scored twice Saturday including three minutes into stoppage time as Toronto garnered an unlikely 2-2 tie with the Galaxy.

In April, the Californian scored another goal in a 1-1 deadlock with his other former team, Chivas USA.

That’s three out of four goals against former clubs.

“I think I want to play a former team every week,” he laughed.

Stefan Frei, the keeper whose long ball found Gordon in the dying moments in LA said the rangy striker gives the team a badly-needed weapon: a player who can corral a loose ball and use his big frame to make space until more attackers find their positions.

“His size is very important to us because we need someone who is big enough to protect the ball until we can make something good happen,” Frei said. “He’s very good at it.”

Gordon comes into an attractive situation. The departure of Dwayne De Rosario has left the club scratching for goals. Going into Wednesday’s game in Foxborough, Mass, against the New England Revolution, Gordon’s four goals were second only to Maicon Santos' five markers. Toronto FC has been outscored 25-15 but Aron Winter's 4-3-3 system has given the club a licence to use a bigger player up front.

“I know we’re a young organization, coaching-wise, but I really like what I see. I’ve been very lucky to come into this system,” Gordon said.

A native of Long Beach California, Gordon has found himself in the East after spending his entire professional career out west with LA, Chivas and Portland (in the old A-League).

“I think it’s a great experience to see the hustle and the bustle of a city,” he said. “It’s been great watching it come and go.”
