TFC's Club Academy Program Expands

Stuart Neely

The inclusion of eight Toronto FC Academy players to the Canada squad for the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup has been complemented by the expansion of TFC's Club Academy Program. Recently, CAP has grown by nine new clubs. This brings total affiliates to 21 clubs in Ontario and the Caribbean.

β€œIn recent weeks and months, the Club Academy Program has made significant developments to stretch its reach to clubs that are strongly tied to their community,” said Academy Director Stuart Neely. β€œI am very excited about where the program is heading and what we can do together to help improve coaching and player development. While it is a very new program and a lot of work has to be dedicated to it now, it is just another way to bring our footballing communities closer.”

Neely goes on to explain CAP.

β€œThe affiliation is a simple concept. The idea is obviously to find players for our Academy Program, but it is also important for Toronto FC to give something back to the clubs that are leaders in their communities. We have a guideline of what clubs can do and where they can aspire to. Whether they need help with curriculums, appearances, workshops, player and coaching development, it is important that we touch on areas of need. We do not have all the answers, but if we can help in any way, then we must.”

β€œEach club has good footballing people involved and they are willing to improve their programming and ours, this is exciting for both of us.”
