Canada Comes Out On Top

Canada - de Guzman

Canada has evened its record at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 1-0 win over Guadeloupe on Saturday evening in Tampa, Florida.

Former Toronto FC captain Dwayne De Rosario struck a 51st minute penalty kick to help secure the three points. Another former Red, Ali Gerba, had gone down in the box two minutes earlier and Canada was rewarded the spot kick.

Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman recovered from a reported calf injury that sidelined him for the opening match, and started for the Canadians in this contest.

Canada had an edge from the fourth minute when Guadeloupe defender Jean-Luc Lambourde was sent off for a dangerous lunge on Salt Lake winger Will Johnson. With Guadeloupe down to 10 players, Canada dominated possession but was unable to unlock the opposition defence until the penalty.

At the 77th minute de Guzman cleanly connected on a Josh Simpson cross, but the blast was blocked inside the area by a Guadeloupe defender.  De Guzman was substituted at the 81st minute for Pedro Pacheco.

The three points pulls Canada to a tie for second place in Group C ahead of Guadeloupe.  Panama, now even with Canada on points but remains in front on goal difference, plays Saturday evening against group-leading United States. Top two teams from the group will automatically advance to the quarterfinals. Finishing third will force Canada to rely on tiebreakers to move forward.

Canada is back in action for its third and final group stage match against Panama on Tuesday, June 14 at 7 p.m. ET on Rogers Sportsnet One.
