Mariner At UEFA Cup Reunion

T
oronto FC director of player development Paul Mariner is at the
UEFA 30
reunion Monday night, as Ipswich Town Football Club celebrates 30-years since its 1981 UEFA Cup Triumph over Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

According to the Ipswich daily, the
Evening Star
"(the event) will feature a host of stars from the team of 1981 - along with the famous trophy itself."

The UEFA Cup - now the Europea League - had a two-leg final in 1981. Ipswich won the opening leg 3-0 at Portman Road on May 6 with Paul Mariner hitting the third goal. The English side lost the return fixture 4-2 two weeks later at Amsterdam's Olympisch Stadion, but won 5-4 on aggregate over two legs.

The trophy was won two days before Mariner's 28th birthday. The former England international started both matches for Ipswich. The side also featured former England captain Terry Butcher and it was coached by legendary manager, the late Sir Bobby Robson.

Mariner, a striker, had started his career with Plymouth Argyle before Robson brought him to Ipswich. He then went on to play for Arsenal and Portsmouth before traveling overseas. He represented England 35 times, scoring 13 goals.

TorontoFC.ca will have reaction from Mariner following the reunion.
