Gold Cup: JDG In For Canada

Julian de Guzman

Toronto FC midfielder Julian de Guzman has been named to Canada's 23-player roster that's eligible for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup to take place from June 5-25. The national team will play a warm-up friendly ahead of the Gold Cup in Toronto on June 1 against Ecuador, which could see de Guzman match up against his TFC teammate Joao Plata.

Toronto-born de Guzman missed the Reds' last MLS match - a 0-0 draw in Colorado - due to suspension, but is expected back with the Reds for a busy week, starting Wednesday with the Nutrilite Canadian Championship Final second leg against Vancouver at BMO Field. Toronto will then play Philadelphia at home three days later on Saturday, May 28 - after which de Guzman will likely report to the national team and miss a bulk of Toronto's matches in June.

Seven North America-based players make up the 23-man list. Other MLS players included in the Canada squad include defenders Andre Hainualt of Houston and D.C. United's Etobicoke centre back Dejan Jakovic. At midfield, Scarborough native and former Toronto FC captain Dwayne De Rosario of the New York Red Bulls has been called for national duty, along with Vancouver Whitecaps FC's Terry Dunfield and Will Johnson of Salt Lake. Former Red Ali Gerba has also been selected for head coach Stephen Hart's team, the striker currently plays for 2012 MLS expansion side Montreal Impact Football Club.
