Canada Unable To Overcome Greece

Dwayne De Rosario

Toronto FC duo Adrian Cann and Dwayne De Rosario started for Canada against Greece on Wednesday, playing the full 90 minutes in an international friendly in which the Canadians were defeated 1-0.

Cann partnered D.C. United centre back Dejan Jakovic at the back, while De Rosario played an attacking role up front alongside Olivier Occean and later Rob Friend.

Canada was quite positive in the first half, building from the midfield and looking lively going forward but couldn’t find a finish.

De Rosario was tasked with delivering the majority of set-piece chances. Canada failed to convert from a series of first half corner kicks despite some erratic movement from Greece goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias.

At the restart, Canadians nearly conceded inside the opening few minutes but for Jakovic sliding in to clear the ball in front of an open Canadian goal.

Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan, making his national team debut, made a fine save on a long range effort by Greece’s Bundesliga-based defender Georgios Tzavelas at the hour mark.

Four minutes later Ioannis Fetfatzidis took advantage of a poor first touch by Canadian defender Adam Straith and blasted the ball by Borjan to give the Greeks the 1-0 edge.

Fetfatzidis nearly made it two-nil for the home team in Larissa after an awkward exchange between Borjan and Cann led to a golden opportunity less than two minutes after his goal.

De Rosario nearly brought Canada level at the 75th minute, but his indirect free kick was tipped over the bar by Chalkias.

Friend had the best chance to equalize three minutes from time on a free header but his redirection trickled just wide of the post, leaving Fetfatzidis' 64th minute strike as the lone goal in an eventful match.

32-year old De Rosario made his 56th appearance for Canada and Cann, 30, laid claim to his ninth cap.
