The road to success often starts with small beginnings.  For Patrick Whelan of Burlington, Ontario, that road began with tiny pair of soccer cleats. 

Born into a self-described “soccer family,” Patrick has been playing soccer since he was two years old and hasn’t looked back.  Now at the age of 12, he plays year round for the Burlington Youth Soccer Association and was recently announced as one the winners of the 2010 BMO Soccer Spirit Award – recognizing his leadership, passion, sportsmanship and desire to excel. 

“He has always had an incredible amount of determination, especially when it comes to soccer,” said Patrick’s mother, Carolyn Whelan.  “Patrick’s passion and energy are contagious – on the field and off – he motivates his teammates and ensures all those involved have a good time.”

Patrick’s ambition is to take his love of soccer to the professional level, just like his favourite TFC player Dwayne DeRosario and TFC alumni Danny Dicchio.

“I think being a great soccer player is about leadership – it’s important to keep yourself and everyone on your team excited and playing well together,” said Patrick. 

As one of the six national winners of the BMO Soccer Spirit Award, Patrick was awarded a $500 BMO Intuition® RESP, BMO Soccer Spirit trophy and an autographed Canadian National Men’s Team soccer jersey.
