Toronto FC has never beaten Columbus and in the three year history of the Trillium Cup (awarded to the team with a better head-to-head regular season record) have had to watch the Crew lift the trophy on the previous two occasions. When the teams first met this year, Columbus took a 2-0 decision with a controversial referee's decision leading to the second goal. Toronto must win 3-0 to lift the Trillium Cup for the first time.

Columbus has not won a match since beating Mexico's Santos Laguna on September 21 in the Champions League. Since that time they have lost the U.S. Open Cup Final and on either side of that triumph over the Mexicans at Crew Stadium, Columbus has failed to win a league match in its last five attempts. This slide has caused them to surrender the league title, after lifting the Supporters Shield for two straight seasons.

The match will be broadcast live on CBC at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, October 16. Nigel Reed and Jason deVos are expected to make the call.
