Peru Downs Canada At BMO Field

TORONTO – Canada surrendered two second half goals to Jose Carlos Fernandez and Jean Tragodara on way to suffering a 2-0 loss to Peru in an international friendly on Saturday at BMO Field.

Two of the three Toronto FC players – Dwayne De Rosario and Julian de Guzman – that received a national team call-up were in from the start against the South American side and played the full 90 minutes.

Reds’ defender Nana Attakora did not feature as impressive teenager Adam Straith was preferred to partner veteran Kevin McKenna at the centre of defence by head coach Stephen Hart. Straith and McKenna both play in Germany.

Toronto captain De Rosario played in a supporting striker role just behind another German-based player in Saskatchewan-born Rob Friend.

De Rosario tried to chip Peru keeper Raul Fernandez at the 25th minute with his left foot, but the ball dipped late and safely landed above the mesh behind the crossbar.

At the 34th minute, a quick buildup by Canada allowed De Rosario to get a shot on goal from 25 yards after PSV Eindhoven midfielder Atiba Hutchinson played the ball up to the TFC skipper.  R. Fernandez bobbled for half a second but covered up before Friend could pounce on the loose ball.

Just before halftime, De Rosario floated in a cross from the right that was again spilled by R. Fernandez, only to be cleared by a defender.

Toronto midfielder Julian de Guzman was employed in a similar role to where he plays for TFC, parking himself ahead of the back four. The presence of de Guzman allowed Hutchinson to venture forward more freely as the first half progressed.

Canada looked very positive after the opening 45 minutes. Stephen Hart’s plan to use a pass-and-move style had the national Reds playing sharp and attacking football. Norwich City forward Simeon Jackson in particular looked lively on the right wing.

The Peruvians turned up the heat in the second half and punished Canada on a pair of defensive errors five minutes apart, leading to goals by J.C. Fernandez at the 67th and Tragodara at the 72nd minutes.

De Rosario had one more shot at the 78th minute, but the set-piece effort failed to curl in on goal.

Peru is seeded 39th in the world, whereas Canada sits 101st in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.

Canada will play a second international friendly against Honduras in Montreal on Tuesday September 7. The three Toronto players however, are expected to leave the national team to join TFC for their match in Chicago on Wednesday September 8 at 8:30 p.m. on Rogers Sportsnet.
