Another Weekend Of Double Success

TFC Senior Academy moved to second place in the Canadian Soccer League after beating the North York Astros 2-1 at Brockton Stadium.

[inline_node:4224]The Reds took their five game unbeaten streak into a second consecutive match against the Astros where a Brennan McNicoll brace helped put the senior boys two points behind league leader York Region Shooters.

Early pressure from the Reds saw McNicoll deliver a fiercely whipped corner into the area that Allando Matheson failed to direct on target.

Then McNicoll's 12th minute free kick nearly caused an own goal for North York, but for their keeper Nelson Zamora making a sharp save.

Zamora wasn't so alert at the 18th minute though, when McNicoll took a quick free kick from 25 yards while the Astros keeper was setting up his wall. Catching the keeper off-guard, McNicoll's first put the Reds up 1-0.

The Astros got the equalizer at the 37th minute from Eric Gregore when Toronto was caught on a quick counter and the match was leveled 1-1.

The Academy however, weren't about to let up.

"We are in a good vein of form at the moment." said Senior Academy head coach Jason Bent, "and we want to continue this unbeaten run for as long as possible. We feel that we can beat any team in the league and that is certainly our ambition."

Reds regained momentum in the second half and chances from Josh Janniere and Matt Stinson were stymied by the post and Zamora respectively after both Toronto players showed poise in the area.

However, there was no keeping out McNicoll's low and well struck 35-yard drive later in the half that was slotted into the corner past Zamora, giving Toronto FC Senior Academy the 2-1 advantage.

Bent believes based on recent display that the Reds are able to get goals from all parts of the pitch and not solely rely on their strikers to provide the scoring. He is optimistic about the busy schedule that's coming up.

"This Saturday we have a very strong test in Serbia White Eagles and I know the players and staff are certainly looking forward to it."

TFC Junior Academy was in action on Saturday afternoon against Milltown Reserves. The young Reds won the match 5-0 with Matthew Arnone picking up a first half brace.

TFC had a fantastic start to the match as midfielder Chris Mannella slotted in a goal on a great pass from Marcus Lees.

At the 23rd minute Tristan Jackman was hauled down in the box, and Matthew Arnone made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

Three minutes later Arnone got his second of the game with a nicely placed shot to the lower corner after being played in by Eric Ngo. The Halftime score was 3-0 in favor of TFC.

Milltown came out determined in the second half to chase the game, however Andrew DeMarco scored off a long throw in by Parker Seymour in the 62nd minute to make it 4-0.

Eric Ngo rounded out  the scoring after finishing on a breakaway at the 67th minute.

Junior Acadey assistant coach Vito Colangelo stressed the importance of a strong start prior to the match.

“I explained to the team that we had to have a solid game in preparation for the MLS Youth Cup in Houston, and that 90 minutes of solid football was required. The boys set the tone early and never let off in the resounding win.”
