Matheson Brace Earns 2-2 Draw

Reds fought back from a 2-0 deficit on Wednesday and drew St. Catherines 2-2 on the road.

TFC Academy traveled to St.Catherines on Wednesday night for the Wolves home opener. The match started in horrific fashion for TFC Academy as they found themselves 2-nil down after only 8 minutes, after the home team took advantage of a couple of poor defensive clearances.

TFC then settled and began dominating possession but failed to take a number of glorious first half chances.

First it was Brennan McNicoll, whose quickly taken free kick caught out Claudio Perri in goal but the Toronto player failed to direct his shot on target.
Next, Nicholas Lindsay showed good footwork to cut inside the defender but his shot was saved by Perri.

St. Catherines nearly went three goals up just before halftime when a header hit the crossbar.

Coach Jason Bent said of the first half, "We gave ourselves so much to do after such a terrible start. Mentally some of the players were not ready for the start of the match and it took us 10 minutes before we realized we were in a game. We made two glaring mistakes in our own box that led directly to goals for the opposition. Players have to be able to hold up their hand and be accountable when they make such errors. At this level and higher such errors are ruthlessly punished."

In the 2nd half TFC Academy came out a different side at the restart and controlled the game. Three substitutes were introduced, Allando Matheson, Ashtone Morgan and Casey D'Mello.

Matheson had a good chance after Oscar Cordon set him up for an uncontested shot from 10 yards but Perry did well to get low and make a good save.

Then Lindsay missed the target from 8 yards with a quick snap shot.

In the 73rd minute the game changed in TFC's favor. Allando Matheson was brought down in the box by Stefan Kamendy, the referee pointed to the spot and Matheson stepped up to finish the penalty to make it 2-1.

Ten minutes later TFC found themselves level after the energetic Morgan skipped past a couple of defenders before delivering an accurate cross for Matheson to redirect and grab his second goal of the match.

Matheson nearly completed his hat trick when Morgan delivered another delightful ball to the back post but the big striker's header flew just wide of the goal.

The game finished under heavy fog and the score remained 2-2.

Bent believes there is a lesson in this match for the youngsters.

"The players responded to the halftime talk and the substitutes came in made a drastic change to the side. The energy levels were high, the concentration levels improved and the players believed that they could get something out of the game. They are young kids and they matured in that second half which is something we are proud of. They kept fighting and could've scored more goals. I know they will learn from this game tonight, as their mental approach to start the game was not to the standard we expect."
