Barrett's Header Wins Chippy Affair

Chad Barrett

TORONTO — Chad Barrett’s second-half goal led Toronto FC to a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution on Saturday, stretching the Canadian club’s unbeaten streak in MLS to three games and five games overall.

Barrett got his head onto a corner kick in the 53rd minute and redirected it past a helpless Preston Burpo, sending the 20,662 fans at BMO Field into delirium.

It was all Toronto would need against a hapless Revs offense.

The goal was justice for Barrett, who had a couple of glorious scoring chances in the first half, while trying to shoulder the offensive burden in the absence of leading scorer Dwayne De Rosario, who is on international duty with Canada.

Toronto, who haven’t lost since May 1, improved to 4-4-1.

Meanwhile, the loss prolongs the woes for the Revolution, who have gone winless since, ironically, beating Toronto 4-1 back on April 10. In that time, Steve Nicol’s side have gone 0-5-2, scoring only twice while conceding 13 goals.

Toronto came in off a successful three-game 10-day road trip that saw them win at Montreal and draw at Vancouver in the Nutrilite Canadian Championship and a scoreless draw against MLS-leaders LA Galaxy.

But the trip came at a price with Nana Attakora, the team’s top defender suffering a hip flexor injury in the Vancouver match. On top of that, Toronto were without Julian de Guzman (hamstring).

Despite the absences, the team came out strong from the opening whistle nearly scoring a minute into the game, as Barrett raced in along on goal. But Burpo stood his ground and blocked the shot.

New England then got into the attack themselves. Buoyed by the unexpected return of Shalrie Joseph, who had missed five games due to personal reasons, they pushed forward, using their speed.

Two good first-half chances barely went begging. First Sainey Nyassi nearly put the away side in the lead, but his shot was cleared off the line by defender Adrian Cann. Then Kheli Dube’s volley from a pinpoint Marko Perovic cross flicked off TFC goalkeeper Stefan Frei’s head and up over the bar.

Last time out against Toronto, Revs rookie Zack Schilawski capitalized on numerous TFC defensive mistakes to record his first hat trick. Nicol inserted Schilawki into the game in the second half to try to spark his club, but Toronto’s defense held up well, and the Revs struggled again and again to create a clear chance.

In the end, New England fell once again, while TFC continued their climb up the table.
